The Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), is the marine technology, which works through the VHF frequency, which allows vessels to identify each other, additionally identify themselves with Coastal Vessell Traffic Systems ( VTS ); AIS is an essential part of the GMDSS system.
The system was designed to increase safety on the high seas and reduce the number of collisions between ships and small craft by allowing them to see each other better, identify each other and communicate their maneuvers in advance.
Of the different classes of AIS terminals (AIS Class A, AIS Class B, AIS AtoN and AIS Base Stations), class A AIS are at the top of the pyramid. They were the first to enter the scene, offering the greatest power and benefits, in addition to being the most expensive.
AIS Class A is mandatory for all vessels in the merchant fleet and are designed to meet international standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Treaty and the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Treaty.
